Kiran Bedi, French envoy launch electric bike

Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi and France's Ambassador to India Alexandre Ziegler today jointly launched the 'easy ride electric bike' at the French Consul General office here.

The launch of the innovative electric bike was part of the ongoing "Bon Jour India" celebrations.

The bike has been developed by French company FranceCol Technology in collaboration with Veltech University and supported by the Indo French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research, a release said.

Speaking on the occasion, Ziegler said the launch of the bike was a highlight of the Indo-French relationship and also part of smart mobility plan.

He said after years of hard work the e-bike has been launched now and added there could be no better place than Puducherry for its introduction.
 

Kiran Bedi, who had a ride on the e-bike, said it was a welcome initiative on the part of the French authorities in association with an Indian institution to design and launch the bike.

She wanted a factory to be set up in Puducherry to manufacture the electric bikes.

Bedi said she was convinced that going by bicycle established enabled build a rapport with the people.

She later said in a tweet that electric bike was "born in France and made in India."

The Lt Governor also suggested that the bike that would be used by women could be named 'Puducherry.
