Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) today asked all piggeries and khatals to quit the city by the month end failing which a drive would be launched against them.

Mayor-in-council, Health, Atin Ghosh said the step was being taken to make the city healthier and beautiful. "There is no threat of encephalitis in the city."

He said a joint drive would be launched by police and KMC after July 21 to clear the city of piggeries and khatals.

A number of pigs were rounded up from near iconic New Market and Mirza Ghalib Street, both near the KMC head quarters and pushed to Dhapa in the eastern fringes of the city during the day, he added.
