The letter sent by Jose, allegedly without government's approval, had kicked up a row with opposition parties in the state alleging that this could be a move to keep Sreedharan away from Kochi Metro Rail project.

Jose was shifted from the post of MD of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) two months ago amid allegations that there had been concerted efforts to keep Sreedharan out of the project.

Dismissing the charge of the opposition parties as "totally baseless," Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the government's firm stand right from the start had been that Kochi metro work would be entrusted to DMRC.

Chandy said the government would write to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath seeking their intervention to ensure that DMRC took up the Kochi metro work.

The fate of Kochi metro became a hotly debated topic after Union Urban Development Secretary Sudhir Krishna informed the KMRL director board meeting last week that DMRC had certain problems in taking up works outside the Delhi region.

Adding a further dimension to the controversy, two days ago, CPI(M) MP P Rajeev released a copy of an "official letter" written by Jose to Krishna seeking a clarification on Sreedharan's role in KMRL.

Opposition parties have been pressing the government to ask for an explanation from Jose for writing a letter to DMRC after he was shifted from KMRL.
