One person was today arrested here in connection with the double murder of an elderly couple, a day after their bodies were found bludgeoned in an apartment in north Kolkata, police said.

Sanjay Sen alias Bappa, whose wife Purnima had earlier worked at the septuagenarian couple's home, was arrested today following an interrogation by officials at the Chitpur Police Station here, they said.

"Though Bappa has not confessed to the crime, we have found some discrepancies in his answers when asked certain questions," a senior police officer said.

Talking about Bappa's alleged involvement in the double murder of Prangovinda Das and his wife Renuka Das, he said: "We have got some specific indications that he may be involved. But they are subject to verification."

Though no valuables other than a new bag was recovered from Bappa, police suspected that the prime motive behind the murder was monetary gain, the officer said adding that a few empty jewellery boxes were recovered from the couple's flat.

Bappa, who was staying in the neighbouring Camp Bagan area, had left for his in-laws' place at Nandiram where Purnima was staying for the last couple of months.

Bappa was close to the Das family and used to help the elderly couple in household stuff, the officer said.

"In fact the couple had helped Bappa with money also but we have found that he was into gambling," he said.

It was also learnt that Bappa's mobile phone was switched off on July 15 evening when, as per the post mortem report - the two were murdered.

A blunt instrument, probably a heavy stick was used to hit the head of Prangovinda several times.

"The same stick was used to hit Renuka on the head before a sharp weapon was used to hit her on the neck. The cut on her neck was not that deep and her trachea was intact," he said adding "there were no marks of struggle or resistance."

The couple's daughter, who was working in the US, would reach the city tomorrow.
