A coach of an empty rake of Kolkata Metro got derailed today while it was being turned towards the opposite direction at a 'Y-siding' of Maidan station here.

Since the train was empty, there was no chance of any injury to passengers, Kolkata Metro spokesperson Indrani Banerjee said.

The incident occurred at 7.20 pm when the empty rake was being turned at the 'Y-siding' of Maidan station for travelling towards Kavi Subhash station in the southern suburbs.

Owing to the alleged suicide by a man before a Metro Railway train at Shyambazar station earlier in the day, truncated services were being run between Central and Kavi Subhash stations, she said.

However, due to a technical glitch at Central station, authorities decided to operate the services from Maidan to Kavi Subhash stations and as such, trains were being turned at the 'Y-siding' at Maidan, the spokesperson said.

A coach of an empty train got derailed during this operation.

Following the incident, truncated services were run from Dum Dum to Central and from Tollygunge to Kavi Subhash, she said.

No services were being operated between Tollygunge and Central owing to the derailment.

Metro services are likely to be normal tomorrow morning, Banerjee said.
