President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday gifted a replica of casket containing relics of Gautam Buddha to Myanmar's State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to mark the deep historical and civilisational links between the two countries.

Kovind is here on a five-day visit for talks with the country's top leadership to continue India's high level engagements with Myanmar under the rubric of 'Act East Policy' and 'Neighbourhood First Policy'.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said that the casket, containing relics of Gautam Buddha, was excavated from Devni Mori, a Buddhist archaeological site in Gujarat.

"To mark deep historical and civilisational links between India and Myanmar, President Kovind gifted State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi a replica of casket containing relics of Gautam Buddha, which was excavated from Dev Ni Mori, Gujarat," he said in a tweet.

Several agreements are expected to be signed during the President's visit which comes amid China's foray into the southeast Asian country with which it has signed a mega port deal.
