Traders of the wholesale vegetable market here have donated ten tonnes of vegetables to famous hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala for the free 'anna dhanam' scheme during the ongoing Brahmaotsvam.

The vegetables costing around Rs 80,000 had been sent in two trucks to the temple free of cost, S Chandran of Periyar Market MMC Licenced Merchants Association said today.

"In fact, we send a minimum of seven tonnes of vegetables to the Tirupati temple once every month. Being Brahmotsvam festival, we have sent ten tonnes of vegetables," he told PTI.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) arranged the trucks for transporting the vegetables, collected from wholesale traders of the Koyembedu market, one of the largest in Asia, he said.
