Led by President of the township Shadi Lal Pandita, over 1,000 men, women and children took out a protest rally from Jagti Township and marched towards the Jammu-Srinagar Highway blocking it at Kol Kandoli (Nagrota) on the outskirts of Jammu city.
Waving the tricolour and with some of them wearing Anna Hazari caps, they sat on a dharna on the highway and held protest demonstrations and anti-government slogans against 12-hour power cuts to the Jagti Township.
The highway remained blocked for four hours forcing authorities to allow traffic on alternative link roads on the highway for passage of traffic on the highway.
"We are facing power cuts for 18 hours. We cannot sleep and perform normal activities in view of the major power cuts by the government", Jagti dweller Sunita Devi told reporters.
She said that despite repeated please with the government, power supply has not improved in the Township. "If the government failed to address our grievances, we will forced to intensify our agitation", she said.
The Jammu and Kashmir government had set up a committee for installation of electronic meter and signing of agreement for power connections for Jagti Township.
People of the Jagti Township, which has over 4,242 flats, are demanding free electricity and government has turned down their demand.
