Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) today said it has hiked the wages for spinners from Rs 4 per hank to Rs 5.50 per hank.

In textile sector, a hank refers to a unit of yarn or twine that is in a coiled form.

"KVIC has hiked wages for spinners from Rs 4 per hank to 5.50 per hank, a rise of 37.5 per cent. The rates had been stagnant from April 1, 2014," KVIC Chairman VK Saxena said in a statement.

The wages come into effect from April 1 itself, he said adding that all state/divisional offices have been directed to implement the recommendations.

"With this hike, the spinners will be getting additional 10 per cent MDA (Market Development Assistance) to the wages totalling about Rs 190 per day as against Rs 90 per day earlier," he said.

The commission has also decided to levy an amount Rs 50 on certain high value products to augment the earnings of artisans, he added.
