"'La La Land' is one of the hottest titles in the festival circuit this year. It is by a director who gave us 'Whiplash', then there is Ryan Gosling. The film is a musical, it has romance, and both these genres have not been explored in a big way in the recent years," Smriti told PTI.
"It (La La Land) is touted to be one of the Oscar front runners and therefore we thought it would be an ideal treat for people who are film club members," she added.
"La La Land",which also starsJohn Legend, Rosemarie Dewitt and J K Simmons, follows a musician and aspiring actress who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles.
Smriti says the team was in constant touch withViacom18 Motion Pictures, who is distributing the movie in India, for getting "La La Land" to the Mumbai film festival, but when that couldn't happen, they decided to screen it at the film club.
"In the West everything is clearly planned and marked out. Viacom worked with us closely to see we get this. We couldn't get the movie for our festival but they were determined that MAMI should be associated with the film, some way or the other."
