Labourer dead as lift collapses at construction site

A 24-year-old labourer was killed after a lift malfunctioned and collapsed from the 11th floor of an under-construction building in Mira Road in Thane district of Maharashtra, police said Monday.

The deceased, Mohammad Zulfiquar Mallik, died on his way to hospital on Sunday afternoon, a police officer said.

A case has been registered against developer, contractor and lift operator concerned on the charge of causing death by negligence under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), he said.

No arrest has been made so far.

Following the incident, labourers held a sit-in protest at a police station demanding action against the concerned builder and compensation to the kin of the deceased.
