A labourer today died as a trench caved in while he was working on the repair of a sewer in west Delhi's Harinagar area, officials said.

A Delhi Jal Board (DJB) official said it is suspected that seepage inside the faulty sewer led to earth collapsing on to the labourer, causing his death.

According to police, the mishap occurred at around 1.30 PM when the labourer, identified as Subodh, 25, was inside the trench for carrying out repairs on a damaged sewer in Som Bazar street in the Shiv Nagar locality of Hari Nagar.

A passerby who witnessed the accident called police following which Subodh was pulled out of the trench and rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police said that the accident took place as the movement of a JCB machine deployed at the site caused earth around the trench to come loose and collapse on to the labourer.

The labourer was pulled out with the help of disaster management personnel and volunteers of civil defence and local police.
