Labourer sentenced to 10 years RI by Mahila court

A 24-year-old labourer was today sentenced to 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment by a mahila court here for abetting the suicide of his minor wife in March 2013, following constant harassment and torture for dowry.

Mahila court judge Vijayakumari also sentenced Selvam to three years for dowry harassment and slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 on him.

The sentences will run concurrently, the judge said.

The prosecution case was that Selvam of Soorapalli village and 14-year-old Siva Sathya fell in love and got married in October 2012. However ever since then she was constantly harassed and tortured for dowry, following which she committed suicide by hanging on March 30 2013.
 

Selvam was arrested and booked under Sections 306 of IPC (abetment of suicide), among others.
