Lactating mother elephant stuck in slush, rescued

A 45-year-old female elephant stuck in slush near Periyanaickenpalayam on the city outskirts, was rescued after nearly five hours today, forest department officials said.

The pachyderm was spotted in the slush at Kunjurpathy forest region this morning, they said adding the elephant was part of a herd comprising a calf and another female elephant.

The lactating mother elephant was found fatigued and unable to get out of the dirt, after getting stuck late last night.

As the calf was being nursed, the officials drove it away before starting the rescue operations at 8.30 AM.

The animal was administered drugs and antibiotics, vitamin and energy boosters besides being fed fruits.
 

Later, the mother elephant and the calf went back to the jungle, officials said.
