The Uttar Pradesh government today suspended Superintendent of Lakhimpur district jail on charges of dereliction of duty after two life convicts escaped from there last month, a senior official said here.

Jail Superintendent Ram Kumar Tripathi has been suspended with immediate effect on charges of dereliction of duty, Secretary (Home) Rajiv Agarwal said.

He said during the suspension period, Tripathi will remain attached to the regional prison office, Lucknow.

In a major security lapse, two convicts serving life imprisonment escaped from the main gate of the highly-guarded district jail in Lakhimpur on July 30.

On the day of the escape, Tripathi had said the role of two jail guards was found to be suspicious and an inquiry was being set up on how the convicts managed to escape despite high security at the gate.

SP Arvind Sen Yadav had held negligence on part of the jail administration responsible for the incident.
