Lakhs take holy dip in sea on Mahodaya Amavasya

Lakhs of devotees took a holy dip in the sea in several places and offered worship at various temples in Tamil Nadu on the auspicious occasion of Mahodaya Amavasya.

A large number of people performed religious rites on the seashore at Rameswaram, Tirupullani, Vedaranyam and Kodiakarai after takingthe holy dip in the sea.

Mahodaya Amavasya is a rare event, which occursonce in 27 years.

Elaborate arrangements had been made at Vedaranyam under the direct supervision of District Collector S Pazhanisamy. Over 3000 police personnel had been deployed on security duty.

A report from Rameswaram said about five lakh devotees took the holy dip in the Agni Theertham sea near and offered prayers for their forefathers during the Theerthavaari ceremony.
 

In Madurai, goddess Sri Meenakshi Amman and Sri Sundareswarar of Madurai templewere also taken to the Vaigai river bed for Theerthavari and public darshan.

Sri Ahobilam Mutt Jeer and Andavan Ashram head were present at Tiruppullani for offering worship to Sri Jagannathaperumal who came to the sea shore from the temple in Garuda vahana for Theerthavari ceremony.

From the Cauvery river at Srirangam and sea shores across the state from Kanyakumari to Tiruchendur also witnessed lakhs of devotees taking holy dip and offering worship.
