Land is a major hurdle for the construction of a new trade centre and leather park by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) in West Bengal, a senior official said today.
"We have three trade centres of our own and in joint venture in Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai. We need land first before we can think of a new trade centre," ITPO chairperson and Managing Directot Rita Menon said here.
Preliminary talk about using land of closed jute mills is yet to take a shape, said Menon who was here to inaugurate the 19th India International Leather Goods Fair, a B2B leather exhibition organised by ITPO.
Once the industry came together the government would come forward and arrange for land for the project, she said, adding that one more trade centre was proposed by ITPO at Kochi.
The government supported leather parks with design and technical support centres, a crucial component for SME leather goods companies.
The Bengal leather industry comprised mainly of small leather goods which accounted for over 50 per cent of national leather exports.
The B2B fair would remain open till March 29.
