The Hambantota port named after President Mahinda Rajapaksa would be established as a preferred transshipment hub for vehicles, Sri Lanka Ports Authority has said.

The vast areas available for parking at Hambantota will be an added boost for the transshipment trade, it said.

The China has funded construction of the port. First phase cost USD 360 million while the second phase expected to be completed by 2014 will cost further USD 750 million.

The port was formally opened in November 2010.
