President Maithripala Sirisena today left on a three-day official visit to Russia, becoming the first Sri Lankan head of the state to visit Moscow in 43 years.

His visit takes place following an invitation by Russian President Vladimir Putin as both countries mark the 60th anniversary of establishment of bilateral ties this year, officials said.

Sirisena and Putin are scheduled to hold talks tomorrow.

His discussions in Moscow will focus on the bilateral ties, including promotion of trade and investment.

Former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike's visit to Moscow in 1974 was the last such trip by a Sri Lankan leader.
