A 25-year old Sri Lankan Tamil refugee attempted self-immolation at the district collectorate here today demanding that he be sent back to the island nation, about three years after being arrested for a bid to undertake an illegal ferry journey, police said.

Police said they foiled the self-immolation attempt by Ajaykumar and detained him.

The man said he had come to India as a refugee when he was a boy. Now he wanted to go back home.

Police said Ajaykumar had in 2015 attempted to return to Sri Lanka by illegal ferry. He was then arrested and sent to the Mandapam special camp.

The refugee had recently managed to escape from the camp. Even as police were searching for him, he came to the collectorate and attempted self-immolation.
