Veteran actor Angela Lansbury said she is "devastated" after she faced flak from all directions for her comments on sexual harassment that women "must sometimes take blame" for being subjected to sexual misconduct.

The 92-year-old actor issued a statement, which was acquired by Entertainment Weekly, in which she said her remarks were taken out of context.

"I would like to add that I am troubled by how quickly and brutishly some have taken my comments out of context and attempted to blame my generation, my age, or my mindset, without having read the entirety of what I said," Lansbury said.

"The Manchurian Candidate" actor added she has always batted for women rights and is pained on being misunderstood.

"There is no excuse whatsoever for men to harass women in an abusive sexual manner. And, I am devastated that anyone should deem me capable of thinking otherwise.

"Those who have known the quality of my work and the many public statements I have made over the course of my life, must know, that I am a strong supporter of women's rights," she said.

In a recent interview with RadioTimes, Lansbury said as women have tried to appear more "attractive" over the years, it was only fair they accepted some of the blame when subjected to sexual harassment.

"... And unfortunately it has backfired on us - and this is where we are today. We must sometimes take blame, women. I really do think that. Although its awful to say we cant make ourselves look as attractive as possible without being knocked down and raped," she said.
