Large Himalayan born river flowed through Rann of Kachh: Govt

An expert committee has concluded that a large river flowed through a wide channel stretching from Himalayas to Rann of Kachh, the Rajya Sabha was informed today regarding scientific evidences of mythological Saraswati.

"The expert committee, based on remote sensing, geological, hydrogeological and archaeological evidences has concluded that a large Himalayan born river flowed through the wide channel of Ghaggar-Hakara-Nara from Himalayas to Rann of Kachh," said Union Minister of State for Water Resources Sanjeev Kumar Balyan.

He was replying to queries whether scientific evidences have revealed that the mythological Saraswati used to pass through Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana.

Among other, the panel has recommended the government to establish a data bank for compiling scientific information on palaeochannels.
 

It has also suggested Union Water Resources Ministry to establish some prominent sites along the palaeochannels as heritage centres for academic/research initiatives.

The committee, headed by eminent geologist K S Valdiya, in its report submitted to the Ministry on October 15 said the river passed through Haryana, Rajasthan and North Gujarat, land texture of which was studied by the panel.
