Large no of teaching posts vacant in central universities:govt

Many central universities, especially the new ones, are not equipped with adequate faculty and infrastructure, government told the Lok Sabha today.

HRD Minister Smriti Irani said that against the sanctioned teaching posts of 16,692 in 39 central universities, 6,251 are lying vacant, which is close to 40 percent of total seats.

Even in old and reputed univerisities like Delhi University and JNU, there are large numbers of vacancies with 902 and 286 teaching posts not being filled as of March 31 this year out of the total strength of 1706 and 809 in the respective institutions.

Among all central varsities, out of 2316 posts for professors 1244 are vacant, of 4593 associate professor posts 2165 are vacant and of 9194 assistant professor posts 2769 are vacant besides 73 other vacancies, she said replying to a question.
 

"Providing proper infrastructural facilities in the central universities is a continuous process and UGC is allocating the funds from year to year to them from the limited funds available," she said.

UGC has written to the universities asking them to identify the causes for vacancies and make concerted efforts to fill them up, she said.
