The law and order situation was improving in Churachandpur town which witnessed large scale violence for the past five days in the aftermath of the passing of three bills in Manipur assembly, police said today.

Police said there were no reports of any untoward incidents when the curfew was relaxed between 5 AM and 2 PM during the day.

There were reports of sit-ins in Churachandpur town by agitators in protest against passing of three Manipur Government bills relating to protection of Manipur People Bill, 2015 to save the indigenous people of the state.

During the curfew relaxation period, shops and business establishments, hotels and market places opened and people purchased essential commodities, the reports said.

However, educational institutions in the town, including government- and private-run schools and colleges remained closed as gaurdians did not send their wards fearing violence, the police said.

Eight people were killed and a number of houses of political leaders, including MLAs and MPs, and government buildings were gutted in the violence by agitators.
