Law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh needs improvement and even SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav feel so, Governor Ram Naik said today.
"I have been saying that the law and order situation in the state is not as good as it should be...There is need to improve it. SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav also feel the same," Naik told reporters here.
To questions, the Governor said if he reviewed the six months of his tenure he found that two days before coming to UP, a major incident (rape in state capital) had taken place in Lucknow and now also attacks are taking place in jail (Mathura jail) and even policemen are being attacked.
"Such incidents are taking place in different parts of the state and they are very saddening...I would say in short that there is need to improve it (law and order)," said Naik, who also presented details of works during his six-month tenure in the Raj Bhawan.
When his attention was drawn to statements of certain state ministers against him and whether he had taken up this issue with the chief minister, Naik said he has not complained about anyone.
"It is not right for me to react to such statements...When a minister says something...If it is right or not has to be seen by one who has appointed him or the chief minister or the party whose government is in office," Naik said.
The governor, who favoured introducing English only in Class VIII during a programme in Allahabad, said there is a mad race for admissions in English-medium schools and convents.
"The son of Raj Thackeray, who is a strong votary of Marathi, has also gone to a convent," Naik said.
When asked if efforts of some Hindu outfits to set up a temple of Nathuram Godse was not a matter of belief, he said, "It is a political demand...I don't see it as a matter of asthaa (faith)."
The question was in the context of his earlier statement that Ram Mandir is a matter of "asthaa" (faith).
Quizzed as to whether it was proper for a person holding constitutional post to express views on Ram Temple at Ayodhya, he said, "I have not said anything which is improper for a person occupying a constitutional post...I had presented my views in a balanced way and after giving it a proper thought.
