Lawyer, 2 others get 3 years in jail in 34-year-old riot case

A local court here has sentenced three persons, including a lawyer and a junior engineer, to three years imprisonment for their involvement in a 34-year-old rioting case.

While passing the order yesterday, Additional District and Sessions Judge Chandra Bhushan Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 18,000 each on advocate Rajender Singh, MTNL junior engineer Mahesh Kumar and one Karanvir Singh after holding them guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

According to prosecutor Yogesh Sharma, several people were injured in a clash between dalits and upper-castes over taking out a procession on the occasion of Ravidass Jayanti in Raidaspuri locality here on February 12, 1979.
 

A case was registered against 47 people for rioting out of which 44 have already been acquitted in the past due to lack of evidence.
