Lawyers today went on a sudden strike after one of their colleagues was allegedly assaulted by police, paralysing work at the local court.

"A group of policemen, led by Sadar Bazar police station SHO Satya Pal Yadav, manhandled and beat up advocate Neelesh Jadaun yesterday evening when he was returning home from court," Mathura Bar Association president Maheshwar Nath Chaturvedi said.

Jadaun was reportedly trying to pacify two warring groups in Sadar area when the policemen beat him up, Chaturvedi claimed.

Protesting against the attack and demanding action against the concerned police men, the lawyers went on a strike and blocked Mathura-Agra road.

Following intervention of the district magistrate (DM) the blockade was withdrawn.

"We would not budge unless the SHO is suspended and sent to Police Lines and a case has been registered against him," Bar Association secretary Bhanu Pratap said, adding that a medical examination has been conducted on the advocate.

Mathura DM Vishal Chauhan said, "City Magistrate Rajesh Prajapati has been asked to enquire the incident. If the SHO of Sadar Bazar police station is found guilty then action would be taken after green signal from the Election Commission.
