Tension prevailed in the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court campus for some time when a group of 50 advocates tried to manhandle an Inspector who came to depose before the court as a witness in a case over his alleged derogatory comments about lawyers.
There was already a misnderstanding between a lawyer and the Inspector over his comments. The advocate had sent representations to the Home Secretary, the DGP and also began legal proceedings against the Inspector as well as Human Rights Commission.
Today when the Inspector came to the court to depose in another case, some advocates saw him. Senior police officers rushed to the spot when it appeared that they would attack him and held talks with the protestors.
Despite this, a large number of advocates barged into the court hall where the Inspector deposed and had heated arguments with him. When some advocates tried to take photos through their cell phones, presiding officer Justin David ordered them to go out and not disturb the proceedings.
The advocates then said that the Inspector had 'degraded' them and was a "corrupt" officer, to which David asked whether it was the way to respect the court.
The Inspector said he had not commited any mistake. At this juncture, the Madras High Court Advocates Association president R C Paulkanagaraj came to the spot and talked to the advocates who demanded a letter of apology from the Inspector, which was done, after which the advocates dispersed.
Police officials then whisked away the inspector from the court.
