Left parties today attacked Delhi Police accusing it of not following the Supreme Court's direction of providing security to Kanhaiya Kumar at Patiala House Court complex and demanded transfer of its chief for a "fair" trial after a group of lawyers attacked JNUSU president.
Seeking action against those who attacked Kanhaiya, media persons and some other lawyers, the parties demanded Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's reply on the issue.
"CPI demands severe action on the so called lawyers who attacked Kanhaiya, other lawyers and journalists. Bassi should be held responsible. For a fair trial and for his failure to maintain law and order, he should be shifted," the Left party said in a statement.
Terming as "RSS goons" the lawyers involved in the attack, the CPI said they could not have targeted Kanhaiya without the "connivance" of police.
Slamming the police for allegedly not following SC orders, CPI(M) said Kanhaiya was attacked under the nose of policemen.
This, the party said, shows "complete breakdown" of law enforcing authority in the national capital.
"There appears to be a complete breakdown of authority of the law enforcing force in the national capital where subversion of judicial orders is done with impunity," it added.
The party's central committee, currently in session, also accused the BJP government of taking to such tactics for diverting public attention from its "failure" to keep the promise of development it made to the people.
Meanwhile, CPI national secretary D Raja said he has taken up the issue of attacks on Kanhaiya and journalists with Singh and sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention.
"What happened inside the court is very shocking. We condemn the attack. I spoke to Singh after Kanhaiya was attacked and raised the issue. The Prime Minister must intervene in the matter," he added.
A group of lawyers today once again unleashed a brazen attack on journalists and Kanhaiya at the Patiala House court complex, a day after they were caught on-camera thrashing scribes and JNU students and teachers branding them as "anti-nationals".
