Former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Left Front chairman Biman Bose, RSP leader Kshiti Goswami, veteran Forward Bloc leader Ashok Ghosh and CPI state secretary Manju Kumar Majumder, were among those those who took part in the signature campaign.

Opposition leader in the state Assembly, Suryakanta Mishra, who belongs to the CPI(M), also participated in the event.

The LF chairman said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should accept the demand for universalising of the public distribution system without having any APL or BPL categories.

Besides, he said, each family should be given 35 kgs of foodgrains at Rs two per kg "keeping in mind that we lose huge quantities in godowns for want of proper maintenance and other reasons at a time when the country is deep neck in corruption."
