Leaders of Left parties attended an event here today organised by Congress to release a souvenir to mark the 125th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

"Nehru-125," a souvenir was released by former Union Minister Narayanasamy in which senior CPI leader R Nallakannu, and CPI(M) MLA A Soundararajan participated.

Asked if their participation had any political significance, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President E V K S Elangovan said, "I don't see any such thing... It is an event to honour Nehru," he told PTI.

CPI(M) State Secretary G Ramakrishnan echoed similar views and added, "there is no need to read too much into it, our participation shows our committment to protect secularism."

In Delhi too, Left leaders participated in an event organised by the Congress to honour Nehru, another leader pointed out.

The Left parties have participated in a function organised by the Congress after a gap of many years.

The Communists were seen together with Congress on public platforms as part of the DMK-led alliance in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections and thereafter till their ties snapped before the 2009 general elections.
