Left parties today staged dharna in the Parliament Complex here in protest against the killing of a student in a West Bengal college by Trinamool Congress activists and atrocities committed on the flood-hit victims in the state by the party's "goons".
Accusing TMC of letting loose a reign of terror on the flood-hit victims and failing to improve law and order, CPI-M leader and Lok Sabha MP Mohammad Salim said "incidents of rapes, loot, killing, torture in West Bengal by the TMC goons" has increased during the last one week.
Speaking to reporters, he also accused the state government of not allowing other agencies to provide relief to the affected people and said they have requested the Centre to provide relief to the affected areas.
Salim's attack on the West Bengal government coincides with the visit of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to Delhi today.
The state has been witnessing to large-scale demonstration ever since the killing of a college student in West Midnapore last week allegedly by TMC activists with both Left parties and Congress hitting the roads and calling bandhs in protest.
Regretting that the Left parties were unable to raise the issues in Parliament due to the ongoing stalemate, he said the Centre was also putting little efforts to break the logjam.
"The Prime Minister is also keeping a meaningful silence on the Vyapam case even as more than 50 people have been killed surrounding the issue," he said, hitting out at the government for "shying away from a debate".
"Despite the prolonged agitation inside the house, it did not attracted the response of the Prime Minister."
He said nowhere in the world such a prolonged agitation has been witnessed and slammed the government's efforts to carry on with the business despite the pandemonium.
Dismissing suggestions that the Opposition parties are not united in their protest against the government, he said CPI-M has always insisted for discussion on the Lalit Modi controversy and over Vyapam scam after initiation of action.
On the issue of GST being introduced in Rajya Sabha today, he appeared to support the opposition protest against it saying "the government rose from its sleep when the Monsoon Session is in its last week".
