Left trade union leader attacked near venue of protest

A Left trade union leader was today allegedly attacked with a sharp edged weapon near the venue of a protest organised by taxi drivers against Uber taxi service in a busy area of the city.

CITU Ernakulam district president K N Gopinath, who suffered a cut on his neck following the attack, has been admitted to Medical Trust Hospital for treatment, police said.

Gopinath was attacked from behind while returning from the protest venue at Palarivattam after inaugurating the strike against Uber taxi service this afternoon, police said.

One Unnikrishnan from Vatakara has been arrested in connection with the incident, they said.
 

Police said a probe has been launched to ascertain the motive behind the attack.
