Press Trust of India Mangalore
: The legal aid clinic at the district jail, which has been defunct for some time, would reopen shortly, senior civil judge and Member Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority B Ganesha has said.

Speaking after inaugurating a legal awareness programme for prisoners at the district jail here, Ganesha said he would take steps to immediately appoint an advocate to the post lying vacant and ensure proper functioning of the clinic.

The clinic would provide free legal service to undertrials in the prison. The purpose of the clinic was to direct the accused on the legal course to be taken and make them aware of their rights, he said.

He also said the Dakshina Kannada District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) would provide advocates to the accused who could not afford a lawyer.

At present, there is a free legal aid clinic functioning at the court premises.

The legal awareness programme was jointly organised by DLSA, Mangalore Bar Association and the District Prison.
