A leopard was beaten to death by villagers in Gujarat's Botad district, prompting the forest department to order an inquiry into it.

A video of people from Rajmol village in Botad beating the male leopard went viral on social networking sites like WhatsApp, a couple of days back.

In the video, about 7-8 persons were seen attacking the feline with sharp objects and sticks.

"The incident happened on July 1, when the animal in search for prey may have entered in the village," Deputy Chief Conservator of Forest (Botad), A E Samuel said.

"The villagers attacked the leopard with sticks and sharp-edged objects and killed it," he said.

An inquiry has been ordered against the villagers who attacked the leopard and killed it, the official added.
