The forest department officials have captured a leopard from Dayalpur village in Meerut district after the rampaging animal injured one villager.

DFO Sushant Sharma said the animal yesterday got trapped inside a cage set up in the jungles of the village by the forest officials.

He said before the officials could reach the spot, the leopard, panicked by the large crowd that assembled there to see it, escaped into a sugarcane field along with the cage. However, it was later netted.

According to the villagers, before it was captured, the leopard injured a man who was working at the sugarcane field.

The big cat, which is about 3-years-old, has been kept in a cage at Hastinapur. Forest department has also sought assistance from a WTI team which will be conducting a medical check up of the canine before it is released in the jungles away from highly populated areas, Sharma said.
