A leopard which injured at

least five persons, was today caught by forest officials at Miriani in Assam's Jorhat district.

Forest department team trapped the adult male leopard at Madhupur village under Mariani revenue circle this evening, sources said.

Soon after the leopard was caught, angry villagers tried to kill the animal but were stopped by forest people who called the police and CRPF personnel to control them.

The leopard was later taken to the Wildlife Care and Rehabilitation Centre. After treatment it will be released in Kaziranga National Park, the sources said.

The big cat, suspected to be an inhabitant of the nearby Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, had attacked over five persons and killed at least six domesticated animals like goats in the village. A person injured by the animal was stated to be in critical condition.

Last week, a forest team which had gone to Madhupur village in search of the animal had to face the ire of the villagers.
