A leopard was spotted up a tree in Dhupguri town in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district early this morning sending residents into a tizzy, a wildlife official said.

A large crowd gathered beneath the tree to see the leopard. Stones and other objects were thrown at the big cat by the onlookers, Wildlife Warden Seema Chowdhury said.

Forests officials, on being informed, arrived at the spot and rescued the terrified animal, Chowdhury said.

It took them five hours to tranquilise the leopard. The animal was later released in the wild at the Gorumara Reserve Forest, she added.
