A leopard was hacked to death by a mob after it attacked two persons, including a woman, in Assam's Sibsagar district, forest officials said today.
The leopard had strayed into Tifuk Tea Estate last evening and the forest department was informed about it but a huge crowd of people had gathered to watch the animal with the forest personnel finding it difficult to tranquilise it.
The animal, suspected to have been injured, suddenly attacked a woman and another person following which the people present on the spot attacked the leopard with sharp weapons and hacked the animal to death.
The forest personnel alleged that despite repeated warnings, the people did not move from the spot and continued attacking the leopard before killing it.
A postmortem of the animal was conducted and it was later buried.
This is the sixth leopard being killed by people in Assam during this year.
