A leopardess was electrocuted on Thursday in a village near the west division of the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat, a forest department official said.

The wild cat, aged 9 to 12 years, died after coming in contact with a high-tension electric wire in a farm in Jagatiya village, D T Vasavada, Chief Conservator of Forest at Junagdh, said.

The leopardess was found hanging from the high-voltage wire in the agricultural farm, he said.

Villagers contacted police and wildlife departments after spotting the carcass.

"We have sent the carcass for post-mortem," Vasavada said.
