Only 1,157 doctors are working against the total sanctioned posts, Health Minister Surendra Singh Negi said during Question Hour.
He said there was shortage of doctors in Uttarakhand which is affecting medical services especially in rural hilly areas.
He said the government has sent a request to the state public service commission to fill the 583 vacant posts for specialist doctors.
Besides, doctors are being recruited on contract at health directorate level by holding walk-in interviews every Tuesday, the minister said.
He said there are 59 community health centres (CHCs), 254 primary health centres (PHCs), 321 government allopathic dispensaries and 129 district, women and base hospitals in Uttarakhand.
