Accusing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of violating the model code of conduct for the upcoming panchayat election, opposition Left Front chairman Biman Bose today alleged that the State Election Commission was acting properly to stop such violation of the code.

"At a rally in North 24 Parganas district today, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a lot of projects. But according to the model code of conduct, she cannot announce new projects. This is a gross violation of the model code of conduct," he told reporters.

"The State Election Commission should take note of such violation of the code and see that everybody goes by the code. The SEC is not acting properly," said Bose, also the CPI(M) state secretary.

The SEC had promised that security personnel would be provided during filing of nomination papers but it did not do so, he said and alleged that there were thousands of instances where the Trinamool Congress ushered a reign of terror to force candidates to withdraw their nominations.

Bose urged the state Congress leadership to take up the matter of providing adequate security personnel for the panchayat polls with the central government.

To a question on Banerjee's allegation that the protest in Kamduni village were organised by CPI(M), Bose said, "These are all rubbish and I don't want to comment on allegations levelled by a person whose politics is determined by lies and rumours."

Banerjee had faced protest by women at Kamduni village in North 24 Parganas district on Monday when she had gone there to visit family of a college student who was raped and murdered.
