South Korean multinational electronics company LG Electronics Inc. plans to help 1,000 visually impaired Indians receive surgery by the end of this year, in line with its commitment to contribute toward the country, a media report said.
The tech giant, which first tapped the Indian market some 20 years ago, had helped 300 Indians receive free eye surgery under cooperation with the Sankara Eye Hospital last year, South Korean news agency Yonhap said.
There are 8.8 million visually impaired people in India, LG said, citing data compiled by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. The total accounts for 20 per cent of people around the world suffering from the disability, it added.
The report quoted the firm as saying that the project came as only 1 per cent of Indians with similar disability received necessary help.
LG Electronics' Indian office said it would continue to roll out various projects to support the handicapped in the country.
