Delhi's Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today today set up a special investigation team (SIT) to probe into the fire at St Sebastian's Church at Dilshad Garden which the Christian community alleged was "deliberate".

"A special investigation team (SIT) to probe into into the fire at St Sebastian's Church at Dilshad Garden has been set up. The team will be led by a Joint Commissioner of police," said a police source.

Jung today met a delegation led by Delhi Archbishop Anil Couto in the morning at Rajniwas and assured them that an inquiry has been instituted to probe the incident.

Yesterday, the Archbishop also called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to urgently order a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Police has registered an FIR against unknown persons for causing the fire with malicious intent on the complaint of the church's parish priest Father Anthony Francis.

Scores of members of the Christian community and social activists staged a protest outside the Delhi Police headquarters. The protesters even tried to enter the police headquarter to meet the police commissioner but were prevented from doing so.

Later, a delegation of protesters met city police chief B S Bassi and put forward their demands before. Bassi assured them of a speedy probe in the case.
