A Libyan security official says three foreigners, including an Italian man, have been kidnapped today in the western town of Zuwara.

He said the other two are believed to be from the Balkan region. All the three are employees of an Italian construction company in Zuwara, he said.

The official says authorities have arrested a Libyan man suspected of involvement in today's kidnapping, but gave no details. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to brief the media.

The kidnappings are the latest evidence of the chaos and lawlessness sweeping the energy-rich North African nation since the ouster and killing in 2011 of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
