Nearly 90 per cent of 4,474.42 km of embankments in Assam have outlived their lifespan leading to frequent beaches during flood, the Assembly was informed today.
Replying to a written query by AGP MLA Phani Choudhury, Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta said Assam has 423 embankments with a total length of 4,474.42 km.
"Out of these embankments, 3,998 km of 295 embankments have outlived their lifespan," Mahanta said.

"During last year's flood, embankments were breached at 50 places. Most of them have been repaired, but works have not completed at some places," Mahanta said.
The Minister informed the House that the government is implementing two projects with assistance from ADB regarding erosion control and repairing of embankments.
