Once the largest mosque in the Indian sub-continent, the 14th century Adina mosque in Malda district will see some of that glory brought to life in a light and sound show which is to play there.

The son-et-lumiere show will tell tourists of how the mosque was built by Sultan Sikander Shah in 1369 based on the design of the Great 8th Century Mosque of Damascus and also talk about its capture for a brief period by Santhal rebels.

The voice-over for the show has been provided by singer Kabir Suman.

The show will bring alive the ancient history of Malda, Food Processing Minister Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury said after inaugurating the son-et-lumiere last evening.

Chowdhury, a former tourism minister, said the project was initiated by the tourism department around two years ago.

District Magistrate Sharad Dwivedi said the tourism department has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for light and sound shows in Adina mosque and Gaur, the capital of ancient Bengal.

Regular son-et-lumiere shows will begin at Adina mosque within a month, Dwivedi said.
