Lightning kills 27 in Bihar; compensation announced

As many as 27 persons were killed by lightning in different parts of Bihar since yesterday, prompting the state disaster management ministry to today announce compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh each to the victims' next of kin.

Five persons, including two girls, died after being struck by lightning in Aurangabad district last evening, while four others, including three boys, died of a similar cause in Rohtas district.

Three persons each were killed last night in Nawada and Sheikhpura districts after being hit by lightning, police said.

A couple - Hare Krishna Pandit and his wife Anokhiwas Devi - died after being struck by lightning at Balwa village in Madhepura district while grazing cattle.
 

Six other deaths of a similar cause occurred in Nalanda district while Bhojpur and Gaya districts each reported two persons dead after being struck by lightning.
