A 55-year-old farmer was killed in Satana taluka here after lightning struck him following unseasonal rains accompanied by hailstorm in the district.

The incident took place yesterday at Pimpalkothe village when farmer--Balasaheb Abhiman Bhamare--was storing onions collected from his field, police said today.

Suddenly lightning struck the region killing Bhamare, while 500 quintals of onions in his field were gutted owing to a short circuit.

The farmer died in a hospital at Taharabad after receiving serious burn injuries.

Unseasonal rains also lashed Dasvel, Katarvel, Daregaon and Rajapur areas in the district last afternoon causing heavy damage to crops.
