Bihar government today doubled the limit to Rs two crore for state legislators to recommend development works under the Chief Minister Regional Development Scheme (CMRDS) in their respective constituencies.
An announcement was made in this regard by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in both houses of the state legislature.
While the ruling and opposition members in the legislative council cheered the state government's decision, the treasury benches thumped their desks in approval in the legislative assembly amid ruckus by the opposition members.
Kumar said that each member of the two houses of the state legislature will be allotted Rs two crore annually for recommending development projects under the CMRDS, which came into force in 2011-12 after scrapping of the MLC/MLA local area development fund by the NDA government soon after coming to power for a second term.
There are 324 MLAs and 75 MLCs in the state.
Under the revised guidelines, the MLAs can recommend works for Rs two crore in their constituency, while an MLC can do so under his constituency spread over more than one district, he said.
An MLC with no constituency can suggest work in any district of the state, the Chief Minister said.
Kumar said it has been decided to set up a monitoring committee at sub-divisional level with the area MLA or MLAs being members of this, after complaints about lack of quality in construction works and problem in properly monitoring their execution.
